2010 Scholarship winner announced UCOL BFA third year student Kate Walker has won the WINC (Wanganui Incorporated) Directors Scholarship. The $1000 scholarship is given annually to a Wanganui Glass School student who has chosen glass as their main area of study. Kate says she chose to major in glass because she wants to develop as a multimedia sculptor. She sees tutor Lionel Teer, whose sculpting has exhibited nationally and internationally, as the ideal mentor. As a conceptual artist working in glass, but also accompanying media, Kate is able to convey complex emotional and social issues. Much of the material she works with is either recycled or “found objects” reused in her sculptures as she is fiercely committed to environmental respect. Kate has been bussing from Palmerston North to the UCOL Wanganui’s campus until this year. She now lives in Wanganui and is quickly becoming part of the of the local art community. “My neighbours here are also at the Glass School,” she says.
